ヘレニズムとはギリシア人（ヘレネス）に由来する語で、ギリシア風という意味で用いられるが、広くギリシア文化全体を指すこともある。

The term Hellenistic (established by the german historian Johann Gustav von Droysen) in the history of the ancient world is used to refer to the shift from a culture dominated by ethnic Greeks, however scattered geographically, to a culture dominated by Greek-speakers of whatever ethnicity, and from the political dominance of the city-state to that of larger monarchies.
