スターリングラード攻防戦（1942年6月28日 - 1943年2月2日）
第二次世界大戦において、ソビエト連邦領内、ヴォルガ河畔の西岸の都市であるスターリングラード（現在のヴォルゴグラード）を巡り繰り広げられた枢軸国軍対ソビエト軍の戦いである。

ヒトラーは当初、この戦闘は比較的早期に終結すると予想していたが、爆撃により瓦礫の山と化した建物を使い巧みに防衛する市民を含むソ連軍の激しい抵抗に遭い、建物一つ、部屋一つを奪い合う市街地戦は冬季にまでもつれ込んだ。

11月から始まったソ連軍の大反撃と、-30℃を下回る冬将軍に枢軸軍は苦戦を強いられ、1943年1月31日には包囲されていたドイツ第六軍(パウルス元帥)が降伏、2月2日にソ連軍が攻防戦に勝利した。

T-34を初めとする新型戦車が投入された大規模な戦車戦も行われ、多くの死傷者を出した。

この戦いはそれまで何度かあった攻勢の失敗ではなく、枢軸軍がソビエト軍に包囲され敗走・降伏するという状況に追い込まれた、常勝ドイツ軍が受けたことのない明確な敗北であった。-wikipedia.jp

The Battle of Stalingrad was a major turning point in World War II, and one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The battle is taken to include the German siege of the southern Russian city of Stalingrad (today Volgograd), the battle inside the city, and the Soviet counter-offensive which eventually trapped and destroyed the German and other Axis forces in and around the city.
